My little family hit the dirt heading west from Granbury, Texas on June 21st. We have been through the mountains in New Mexico, the Buttes and Canyons in Arizona, the seaside in California, more mountains in Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado. We have been so close to some of the wildfires we have been able to hear the crackles and feel the heat. As I look at the mountains, I am noticing something I had never chosen to absorb before, the ridges always form giant “V” or what this “Cover It With Love” girl prefers to see are the tops of giant hearts.
And just like that, I hear these familiar words in my spirit:
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” — Psalm 121:1–2
In these moments, I realize our journey through life was never meant to be built on feelings or circumstances. It runs much deeper than that. It is built on knowing.
The mountains stand like faithful guardians. They provide boundaries, shelter, and protection. In much the same way, God has given us spiritual protection. He has not sent us into this world defenseless. Through Christ, we have been given everything we need.
Paul reminds us in Ephesians to put on the full armor of God: the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
Have you ever noticed that the armor covers the front of the soldier?
I don’t believe that’s an accident.
When we receive God’s saving grace, fix our eyes on Him, walk in obedience to His Word, and trust His promises, we are called to keep moving forward. We don’t have to live looking over our shoulder in fear because God has our back.
The One who made the mountains goes before us, walks beside us, and watches behind us.
So today, lift your eyes.
Not to your circumstances.
Not to your fears.
Lift them to the Maker of heaven and earth. The One who gives peace for your feet, truth for your mind, faith for your battles, and strength for every step ahead.
The mountains may remind us where to look, but our help has never come from the mountains.
Our help comes from the Lord.
