Singing Through Fear, Trusting Through Doubt

“Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His mercies endure forever”

This morning, I woke up to a sermon from Pastor Joseph Prince. He was quoting Scripture and reminding listeners that the battle belongs to the Lord. He shared story after story from the Bible where the hero seemed to have no real chance in the natural—just a sling, a song, or simple obedience. Yet when they stayed surrendered and kept their peace, God came through.

That landed with me.

Then I read something Tim Keller once wrote:

“Faith without some doubt is like a human body without antibodies. People who go through life without facing or asking hard questions will find themselves defenseless when faced with tragedy.”

That landed too.

As Christians, I think we can sometimes be especially prone to hiding our worries, fears, and questions. We do not want to appear weak. We do not want to be judged. We fear that admitting doubt might somehow mean we lack faith. So we tuck those struggles away and try to look strong.

But that strategy does not work.

Doubts need to be brought into the light. They need to be aired out, processed, and surrendered to God.

I think of Thomas in the Bible. One of the twelve apostles. He doubted the testimony of the other disciples when they told him they had seen the risen Christ. That is why many know him as “Doubting Thomas.” But what stands out to me is not Thomas’s doubt as much as Jesus’ response to it. Jesus met him with loving kindness. He did not shame him. He invited him closer. He let Thomas see for himself.

That landed in a powerful fresh way this morning.

As I prepare our RV for a vacation through the Piney Woods of Texas, Florida, and Tennessee, I found myself going before the Lord and pouring out all my worries, fears, and doubts. Not polished. Not pretty. Just honest. And through the pages of Scripture, I could hear His whisper to my heart:

I’ve got you. You are mine. I see you. I love you.

He reminded me that it is only in our weakness that there is room for Him to work most powerfully. He is not irritated by our need. He is pleased when we ask for His help. He welcomes our dependence. He is not asking us to carry battles that were never ours to begin with.

What peace there is in remembering that.

The battle is His.

The healing is His.

The strength is His.

The victory is His.

And our place is to keep our eyes on Him.

So today, this is my prayer:

Lord, help me. Heal me from the inside out from every worry. Strengthen my nervous system. Quiet my mind. Steady my heart. Teach me to keep my eyes on You, because in You there is peace. Remind me that every battle belongs to You. Thank You for the countless ways You have carried me through my life. I have sung of Your goodness before, and I pray You make me even bolder in telling others just how good You are. I love You too.

So I will keep singing “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His mercies endure forever”
